From sea to shining sea, Red Lobster closed dozens of its seafood restaurants ahead of an announcement Sunday night that Red Lobster filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Florida.

Red Lobster's website has listed 99 stores in 28 states as "temporarily closed." For some restaurants, it might not be so temporary. Some of their kitchen equipment is up for auction on a restaurant liquidator's site.

What's striking about the closings is how the restaurants dot the country. The seafood chain, founded in 1968, is the largest in the U.S. with 551 stores in 44 states, according to the court filing. Red Lobster says it has more than 700 locations worldwide on its website.

According to Red Lobster, the company intends to use the bankruptcy proceedings to "drive operational improvements, simplify the business through a reduction in locations, and pursue a sale of substantially all of its assets."

Red Lobster said in its statement Sunday night that it would sell its business to a new company that will be owned and controlled by its lenders. The statement also said its restaurants still will be open throughout the Chapter 11 process.
